Robin Hood sent Will Stutely in disguise to the Blue Boar Inn to find out the Sheriff's plans, but the Sheriff's men discovered him and took him prisoner. The landlord immediately sent a messenger to Robin with a note saying Will would be hanged the next day, so the outlaws hurried to Nottingham to save him. The outlaws mixed with the crowd at the town gates, and at the right moment Little John jumped onto the cart to cut Will's ropes and disarm the Sheriff. The other outlaws joined the rescue by shooting arrows, which made the frightened Sheriff and his soldiers run away in panic. Robin and his men safely returned to Sherwood Forest and decided to stay there for the winter to prepare for spring.
